OUR CONVERSATION WITH - PENNY & SANDY from THE STUDIO MELBOURNE

This is our LAST conversation piece for 2017-WOW! We couldn't ask anybody else but the wonderful wonderful team from The studio Melbourne Penny and Sandy. Penny has been such a great support for Jonquil over the past few months.  Through this Jonquil journey, we have met so many talented people and made some genuine friends! Penny from The Studio Melbourne has been one of those special people.  Her enthusiasm is contagious and her creative flair is exciting (as you'll see below!).  We interviewed Penny to share with you her story, her passion and her advice for those who would like to pursue a career in styling. It's been a pleasure! Thanks Penny and Sandy!

What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.

Hmmmmm... how did I get into design? I guess it was a natural progression. I was a florist for many years and loved working with nature. It taught me a lot about colour, form and scale. After I sold my shop I started renovating my own house. I was shopping a lot at Moss Melbourne and ended up working there! I loved every minute of it and learnt sooooo much. I worked there for 6 years and then got itchy feet to work for myself again. Sandy and I have been best friends for years and had worked on many projects together. She started taking photos of my interior work and we were lucky enough to have one of our first shoots published in Home Beautiful.

What is your favourite book/magazine on design? How about your favourite site?

I love all of the interior mags for different reasons but my favourite is Belle and Pinterest is my go-to site for inspiration

Where do you draw most of your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from everywhere! Colour plays a big role in my work and I love pushing the boundaries!

What stylists do you admire or were/are influenced by?

One of my stylist hero’s is Megan Morton! I did one of her styling masterclasses many years ago and I was so impressed with her kindness and generosity with her knowledge of the industry. She’s a very special human. I also love Abigail Ahern, she is the queen of the dark side!

What are some of the harsh truths about styling (it’s not as easy as it seems, right?)

I think that being a “stylist” today has become a bit oversaturated!!! There’s a lot of copycats out there who don’t have an original thought and that makes me a bit sad. Creating original content is something we strive for. Obviously, our style isn’t for everyone but we constantly push ourselves to have a style that is recognized as The Studio Melbourne! If we’re not happy with the end result we don’t hesitate to reshoot.

What are some of your favourite shoots you’ve worked on?

I guess our favourite shoots are when we do collabs and have creative license!! Not having to stick to a client brief can be very liberating;)

What’s your advice for people who want to get into styling?

What’s my advice? If you love it then go for it!!! Honestly, though, I think you need to expose yourself to as many styling opportunities that you can. There’s great workshops and short courses available and Instagram is a fantastic way to build a portfolio for yourself. Find your own style and hone it.

Who do you love to follow on Instagram?

Instagram is great! I love the diversity and follow many different people. My favourite is connecting with kindred spirits and encouraging others. Kindness goes a very long way on this forum.

What are you working on right now that you’re most excited about?

We are working on a winter shoot for a homewares company that have been great clients! We will be doing a bit of maintenance around the Studio and plan on repainting the floor!!!

How do you celebrate Christmas?

Christmas is usually a mad family and friends day but this year we are having a very quiet one in the country, with champagne of course!

What do you have planned for the new year?

The New Year will see us continuing to build our little biz. We are both determined to focus a little more on our health and well-being as well! 2017 wasn’t our year for exercise that’s for sure! Yoga classes here we come:)

Follow Penny here and The Studio Melbourne Here and Sandy the fantastic photographer here!
